Best electric cars under £35,000 – which

The UK government’s Plug-in Car Grant (PiCG) gives customers an extra saving when they opt for an electric car, and has helped thousands of UK buyers make the switch to an EV since it was introduced in 2011.

The grant has been tweaked over the years but ministers slashed the saving from £3,000 to £2,500 in 2021and lowered the price cap for eligible cars from £50,000 to £35,000.

Overnight, a large number of cars suddenly become ineligible for the grant but there are plenty of models under £35,000 which continue to qualify. But which ones are the best?

Here we take a look at the best electric cars under £35,000. Have we missed any? Agree with our choices? Let us know in the comments below…

TopGear.com Electric Awards 2021: Porsche

Hot on the heels of the Oscars, it’s the TopGear.com Electric Awards 2021. Being close in date is where the similarities end for these two glittering ceremonies, however. Unlike emissions from the Academy Awards – overlong speeches and whatever comes out the back of those stretched Lincolns – the air is that bit sweeter for our Electric Awards winners this evening. Also, we’re coming to you from a service station in Braintree, Essex, which is a tack the Academy is yet to try.

Join Top Gear Magazine editor Jack Rix as he reveals the greatest electric cars in the world right now from Gridserve’s very fancy, state-of-the-art EV recharging forecourt. In the mix we’ve got Lotus’ Evija EV hypercar, the retro Renault 5 Concept, the Polestar 2 featuring some Tom Ford off-road adventure modifications, the Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo estate, and Audi’s incredibly sharp e-tron GT. Enjoy a whole host of never-seen-before videos, plus we’ll be joined by Paddy, Freddie and Chris as the Top Gear telly boys tell us their personal favourites from the world of electrified motoring.

Enough waffle. Let’s roll out the red carpet for the TopGear.com Electric Awards 2021, sponsored by Hankook.

MG ZS EV SUV 2021 in-depth review: The

Read our full review of the MG ZS Electric here:

You don’t have to be a car nut to know of the name MG. Ask anyone to name a sports car and the chances are one of MG’s quaint little two-seaters would be their answer. The MGB, most likely.

The MG brand of today is very different from the one that existed 15 years ago, let alone the company that built the MGB back in the 1960s. Since 2005, MG has been owned by a Chinese company and over those 15 years the brand hasn’t just become less British with every passing year, but turned into a car company that builds value-orientated cars like superminis and SUVs rather than sports cars.

MG can also be called an electric car maker. Based on the petrol-engined MG ZS, the ZS EV is a small SUV built not in Longbridge, Birmingham (like those famous MGs of the past), but in China. This is not a bad thing, as the Chinese are bang-up-to-date with electric car technology.

The ZS’s relatively compact shape puts the MG up against other small crossovers like the Hyundai Kona Electric, the Kia e-Niro and its more quirky brother, the Kia Soul EV.

The ZS EV is powered by a 141bhp electric motor and a 44.5kWh battery pack giving a range of 163 miles – some 100 miles and 60bhp less than the Hyundai and the two Kias offer. While normally that would be an instant black mark against an electric car, the MG fights back on price. The most basic ZS EV costs £25,495 – roughly £10,000 cheaper than the Hyundai.

The MG makes a strong case for itself to be the UK’s best value electric car. Nicki Shields finds out if that’s the case.

The shocking truth about charging an EV in

If you enjoy the video then please help us and hit that like button!

You can support the channel over on our Patreon page –

Before the EV fanatics jump in on the comments, please take a moment to realise this utterly dreadful situation where people are trying to get on with their jobs and lives but with unbearable circumstances when trying to charge an electric car in the UK.

Charging an electric car should be easy. Reality is, it’s soul destroying bad. Something needs to be done.

We’re still in it’s relative infancy but surely it’s unacceptable that only a handful of chargers actually works! It’s so difficult to plan any journey in an EV and it seems too common an occurrence that leaves you anxious and frustrated.

We’re being told by the UK Government that we can only buy EVs from 2030, which is only 9 years away!! If people are going to buy EVs in large numbers charging infrastructure needs to be improved significantly.

Hyundai Ioniq Electric 2021 in-depth

Read more about the Hyundai Ioniq Electric on Electrifying.com here:

The Ioniq is a little bit like milk – there are three different types available depending on how healthy you’d like to be. The full-fat is a hybrid, the semi-skimmed is a plug in hybrid, or the skimmed is the car we are looking at here, the full electric version which is entirely propelled by battery power.

It’s been around since 2017 but things develop quickly in the electric car world so the Ioniq has recently been updated to keep it competitive against newer rivals.

The biggest change is a new battery. At 38kWh it’s competitive but not as Tesla-rivallingly huge as Hyundai’s Kona. Still, not everyone needs the range (and expense) of a bigger battery and the Ioniq will go 193 miles between charges, Hyundai claim – which would be around 160 miles in the real world. That’s impressive compared to rivals such as the best-selling Nissan Leaf 40kW, which has an official range of 168 miles despite having a marginally bigger battery.

But what are the other changes and has the game moved on since the Ioniq’s original 2017 launch? Nicki Shields finds out.
